Created out of a love for craft, storytelling and print.

Vanguards started as magazine with a focus on Scotland and all the wonderful things that are made there and the people that make them.
We featured brands and people that were making a positive impact in their community, and creating products that people loved.
Over the course of a few years, we travelled the length of Scotland interviewing sheep farmers, chatting with Nans who knit, and staging photo shoots in Glasgow clubs at 2am.
We then made an online edition which widened its lens to the rest of the UK with more regular content.

A personal highlight was writing an ode to the wonder that is a Sam Smith’s pub.
It’s a relief to walk into a Samuel Smith’s pub. A little ping of excitement is released when you push open their heavy wooden doors and a dense wave of beer and conversation hits you. This is the pub to be in. You have made it.
Friendly staff. Victorian. No music ever. Grand yet homely. And a pint cheaper than most others (especially within the M25). It all comes together perfectly in a Sam Smith’s boozer […]
We also made some products.
At our launch events we sold some kick-ass merch that we made in collaboration with some of the brands and designers we featured in the magazine.
The tote bags were made out of recycling sacks from Glasgow. The industrial bag company that supplied them was very confused why we wanted such horrible materials for a consumer product. We thought they looked cool.
